CUTTING-EDGE ENGINEERING
ON HISTORIC GROUND
The dome’s supporting structure is a sophisticated design comprising glulam beams, connected by custom-designed and bespoke steel connection nodes. This is complemented by triangular industrial elements, constructed using a lightweight timber frame system. Our Timber Intelligence, with its utmost precision in engineering, production and project management, ensures flawless on-site execution.
The dome will later be enclosed with EFTE cushions, which will flood the interior with plenty of natural light. In the central space below, we are constructing a stepped wooden gallery that will connect the ground floor with the upper storey – an inspiring place for personal interaction, relaxation and events.
The aim of the entire design is to reduce CO2 emissions to a minimum through efficient architecture and a careful, sustainable choice of materials. Furthermore, the concept creates a building that blends gently and respectfully into the historic grounds of the Dollar Academy in terms of form and materiality.
The domed roof has always been a defining feature of our new Futures Institute, and we are delighted to see the structure now in place. It is fitting that such a striking example of architecture and engineering will house FIDA’s pioneering and inspirational educational offering.
